Course Overview:
This 15-week, four-credit online MOOC offers an in-depth exploration of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka through 40 modules grounded in canonical texts and their commentaries. Students study the origin and development of Abhidhamma, the interrelationship of mind (citta), mental factors (cetasika), material phenomena (rūpa), and the concept of nibbāna. The curriculum also tackles doctrinal controversies—such as Bhavaṅga, Ālayavijñāna, Hadayavatthu, and Kathāvatthu—to illuminate their historical and philosophical significance.
Schedule & Assessment:
Modules unfold weekly, aligned with corresponding graded and non-graded assignments, supplemented by essays every three weeks. Total estimated effort is 8–12 hours per week. Evaluation includes 30% internal coursework and a 70% proctored CBT exam conducted by India’s NTA.
Enrollment History:
Originally offered Jan–May 2023 (1,116 global learners), the course has since relaunched in Jul–Oct 2023, Jan–Apr 2024, Jul–Oct 2024 (with enrollments ranging from 961 to 1,110), and Jan–Apr 2025 (~533 learners). The current session (starting July 17, 2025) has enrolled 179 students to date.

Weekly live Q&A sessions and active forum support from the instructor team. Open to graduates with English proficiency. Provides free learning on SWAYAM, with the option to earn a certificate (₹750 exam fee), and eligible for UGC-mandated credit transfers via CIHTS, Sarnath.
