Abstract

The Perfection of Wisdom in First Bloom: Relating Early Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā to Āgama Literature explores the formative stages of Mahāyāna Buddhism through one of its foundational texts. Bhikkhu Analayo offers a meticulous comparative analysis of the earliest surviving versions of the Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā (“Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines”)—preserved in Chinese and Gandhāri—alongside parallel passages in Āgama sources. Through his deep philological expertise, Analayo demonstrates that the development of Perfection of Wisdom teachings was gradual and interconnected with non‑Mahayāna traditions, rather than stemming from a sharp doctrinal break. The book illuminates evolving themes such as śūnyatā (emptiness), the bodhisattva ideal, the role of women, and scriptural motifs like self‑immolation. By tracing Mahāyāna’s early evolution, this work provides fresh insights into the origins and porous boundaries of Mahāyāna thought.
