Abstract

Iru – The Remarkable Life of Irawati Karve by Urmilla Deshpande and Thiago Pinto Barbosa is a compelling biographical narrative that brings to life the pioneering anthropologist Dr. Irawati Karve. This review explores the book’s structure, style, and rich content, which traces Karve’s journey from her doctoral research in Germany to her groundbreaking work in India, particularly at Deccan College. The biography vividly captures her academic contributions, personal reflections, cultural observations, and progressive outlook as a woman scholar who challenged social conventions of her time. While the narrative's frequent temporal shifts may occasionally disorient readers, the book remains a significant and engaging read, offering rare insights into one of India’s foremost intellectuals in the field of anthropology.
